In 1978, 20-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich took off in a small Cessna 182 for what should have been a routine flight across Bass Strait. It would become one of Australia’s most chilling aviation mysteries.
Just before disappearing, Valentich radioed Melbourne Air Traffic Control to report that an unidentified flying object was circling his aircraft and “playing some sort of game.” Moments later, the transmission ended… and Valentich was never seen again.
In this first of a two-part series, veteran UFO investigator George Simpson - with more than three decades in the field and over 100 investigations - recounts the extraordinary night he witnessed Valentich’s aircraft before it vanished into the darkness. We examine the original radio recordings, the strange behaviour reported in the skies, and why the case still fascinates investigators nearly half a century later.
